Check out the minimum requirements to play The Witcher 3 on PC

The Witcher 3 hits new heights in popularity with the release of the series starring Henry Cavill on Netflix. According to data from Steam itself, one of the digital stores through which the game is sold, the game broke records for users and sales on PC. The numbers are even higher than during the RPG’s release period.

If you are also interested in the Geralt of Rivia saga, it is a good idea to check if your computer has the necessary hardware to run the game. So we’ve compiled below all the minimum requirements listed by the Projekt Red developer CD, as well as the most suitable parts for those who want to venture into maximum graphics.

Below are recommended processors, graphics cards, and other components for playing The Witcher 3 on PC.

Minimum requirements to play The Witcher 3 on PC

  • Processor (CPU): 3.3 GHz Intel® Core™ i5-2500K or AMD Phenom II X4 940
  • Graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870
  • RAM memory: 6GB
  • Storage: 40 GB of free storage space
  • Operating system: Windows 7 or 8 (8.1) in 64-bit versions
  • DirectX: version 11

To find out if your CPU can handle The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red recommends finding an official benchmark or spec and comparing the numbers to those of the advertised models (second generation i5 2500K onwards). Note the minimum clock required for the Intel model.

Regarding graphics cards, the developer claims that he is only responsible for desktop card compatibility, but there are already numerous models aimed at notebooks that can run the game without any problems, such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060.

It’s important to note that the minimum specs required by a game indicate compatibility, that is: the game will run without any issues or crashes, but don’t expect high performance or graphics quality. It’s very likely that you’ll need to significantly reduce your graphics options to get a good FPS rate.

Traditionally, The Witcher 3 is one of the most used games as a benchmark for processors and graphics cards, precisely because of its fancy graphics and considerable weight.

Recommended hardware settings for The Witcher 3

  • Processor (CPU): 3.4 GHz Intel® Core™ i7-3770K or 4 GHz AMD FX-8350
  • Graphics card (GPU): NVIDIA GTX 770 or AMD Radeon R9 290
  • RAM memory: 6GB
  • Storage: 40 GB of free storage space
  • Operating system: Windows 7 or 8 (8.1) in 64-bit versions
  • DirectX: version 11

Two are the changes between the lists. The first of these is the processor, with at least a third generation Intel i7 being recommended. The graphics cards range up to the GTX 770 series.

However, here’s an observation: at the time of the game’s launch, the most common resolution was Full HD and there weren’t many modifications yet.

If you intend to play The Witcher 3 in resolutions such as QHD or 4K with all effects enabled and with a large number of frames per second, the ideal is to invest in current generation processors and graphics cards such as AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series and the NVIDIA RTX 2060 or higher cards.

A tip to make the experience even more enjoyable is to invest in replacing an HD (hard drive) with an SSD drive. Since it has no moving parts, it operates at much faster speeds and loads the game in just a few seconds.

Another big benefit of switching is the fact that SSDs tend to smooth out small crashes that occur on HDs when loading parts of the scene. SSDs are more expensive and have less storage space relative to the cost, but their benefits are notable as they are among the most important upgrades you can make to a PC today.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming

While The Witcher 3 is still hugely successful, it will soon lose some of its attention as Cyberpunk 2077 is just around the corner. This is the new open-world RPG developed by CD Projekt Red that promises to rock the market with cutting-edge graphics in addition to a full interaction with the game’s universe.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released for PC on April 15th, 2020 and will even feature Keanu Reeves as one of the characters in the story. You can bet that this game will be much harder than The Witcher 3.
